Health Risks of Obesity

Obesity is on the rise and has dramatically increased in the last 25 years. Kids are playing less and less outside and sitting more on the couch and parents are letting this happen. Parents rather give their kids money for fast food instead of a healthy lunch. Parents are also cooking less and bringing home take out food instead. I find it very sad when an obese parent has given up losing weight and letting their 15 year old child get gastric bypass surgery instead of getting them a gym pass. Even if these obese or overweight individuals took a 1/2 hour walk everyday, I bet they would feel a lot better and have more energy to actually live a healthier lifestyle.

The health risks for obesity is scary. Even though smoking remains the greatest public risk in Canada, unhealthy lifestyles and physical inactivity and their contribution to obesity are also critical to public health. Statistics Canada shows that 2 out of every 3 adults in Canada are overweight.

Health risks for obesity are as follows:

-hypertension or high blood pressure
-coronary heart disease
-type 2 diabetes
-gallbladder disease
-sleep apnea and other breathing problems
-breast, colon, and endometrial cancer
-mental health problemsI encourage everyone to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Even a walk everyday or hit the gym at least 3 times per week can make a big difference. Also be a good example to your children by participating in family activities outside, or signing them up in sports. Limit your fast food intake and have more family meals together. Plus this is a great way to catch up with your family and their day!
