How Do You Start Your Day?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It kick starts your metabolism and replenishes your glycogen stores after your body has been fasting all night. Breakfast is the most important meal, but what do you eat for breakfast?

I like to eat oatmeal every morning. It is full of good stuff for you to start your day off right. 1/2 cup of rolled oats has 190 calories, 5 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein and 32 grams of clean carbohydrates. I usually microwave mine with stevia, cinnamon and top it off with 1/2 cup blueberries. Yum!

A lot of people out there like to eat cereal in the morning. Some popular cereals are Raisin Bran, Kashi Go Lean Crunch, Corn Pops, General Mills Almond Oatmeal Crisp, and Frosted Mini Wheats. Here are the nutritional breakdown of these cereals:

Raisin Bran: 1 cup 190 calories, 46 grams carbohydrates, 18 grams sugar, 6 grams fiber, 5 grams protein.
Kashi: 1 cup 190 calories, 36 grams carbs, 13 grams sugar, 8 grams fiber, 9 grams protein
Corn Pops: 117 calories, 28 grams carbs, 0.2 grams fiber, 14 grams sugar, 1 gram protein
Almond Oatmeal Crisp: 240 calories, 47 grams carbs, 4 grams fiber, 16 grams sugar, 6 grams protein
Mini Wheats: 190 calories, 44 grams carbs, 5 grams fiber, 13 grams sugar, 4 grams protein

Even though some of these cereals are high in fiber and protein, they are all filled with sugar! Some of these cereals have the same amount of sugar as a chocolate bar. For instance, a Kit Kat Bar has just 2 grams more sugar than 1 cup of Raisin Bran. I bet most of you did not think of it like this.

Do you rush out the door in the morning and make a pit stop at Starbucks on your way to work? A grande Starbucks Caramel Macchiato made with whole milk will cost you not only money out of your pocket, but it will also come with 270 calories, 10 grams of fat, and 34 grams of carbohydrates which come from the sugars in the milk and syrup. What do you eat with your drink? How about Starbucks famous Blueberry Scone? 460 calories, 22 grams fat and 61 grams of carbohydrates! This breakfast will add up to 730 calories, 32 grams of fat and 95 grams of carbohydrates. This breakfast is almost half of most people's caloric intake for the day.

Are you a Tim Horton's fan? Suppose it is a hot day and you want a cold beverage. You order a small Iced Capp and to go along with it a Raisin Bran Muffin. The small Iced Capp alone is 250 calories, 11 grams fat, 33 grams carbs and sugar. The Raisin Bran Muffin is actually worse for you coming in at 300 calories, 10 grams fat, 53 grams carbs and 25 grams sugar.

This is why we have an obesity crisis in North America. Not enough people think about what they eat and just think about how good it tastes at the time. There are others out there that do not understand why they are gaining weight because they work out everyday. Starting with these poor food choices first thing in the morning will not only make you feel sluggish and unhealthy, but the long term result will be weight gain, high cholesterol, and other problems.

Think about what you eat and make time to eat something healthy. You will thank yourself later.
