The Battle with Food and Self Image

I am going to hit on a sensitive topic, about self image and eating disorders. There are a lot of confused people out there when it comes to eating right for your body type in order to lose weight and feel good about themselves. There is so much information in book stores, online and even at your gym. I do not blame people for feeling confused, I used to be confused about food myself.

As a fitness professional, I talk about healthy eating all the time. I believe in eating small portions 5-6 times per day of healthy protein, carbohydrates and fats. I do not recommend a low calorie diet for an extended period of time and I definitely do not believe in no carbohydrate diets. I have seen too many people damage their metabolisms by eating no carbs or eating very little calories, and in order to fix the damage, it can become quite frustrating, upsetting and emotional.

There are too many fad diets out there that are basically no calories or very little calories, which will  make you feel starved, and if you happen to follow through with the whole "fad diet" most likely the weight will pile back on very fast because your body is starved. This is another way to damage your metabolism.

Unfortunately there are too many people out there with eating disorders. It is a very sad disease that effects a lot of women and men, and most people will not even talk to their loved ones because they do not know what to do. If you think a good friend or a family member is hurting themselves this way and you decide to talk to them about it, approach them in a very non-confrontational manner so you don't upset them and make things worse. Do not talk about food and do not take on the role of a therapist. Here is a link for Canadians to get the help they need http://www.canadadrugrehab.ca/Eating-Disorder-Treatment.html

Another unfortunate thing out in the world of fitness, there are a lot of fitness professionals giving out bad weight loss advice to others. This is really scary to me because people come to us for help and advice, and if we tell them in order to lose weight you can only eat spinach and egg whites, they will listen.

Weight loss should come gradually and in a healthy way, eating enough calories to have energy throughout the day and during your workouts. If you ever feel confused about your calorie consumption, you can always keep a food journal and weigh and measure everything so you get a good idea of how you are eating. Food should not become the enemy and you should not allow your emotions and bad thoughts about food to get in the way of a fitter and happier you.

Please, if you are reading this and this is how you are feeling, please seek advice of a professional that will help you with proper eating before this unhealthy way of life takes complete control of your body, mind and spirit.
