Autoimmune Disease- You Are Not Alone

Also posted on KelownaNow.com

Having an autoimmune disease can be a very hard and stressful journey, and It is estimated that approximately 1 in 5 of us suffer from one or more of the 140+ diseases classified as autoimmune in nature. That’s double the number of people who suffer from heart disease, and four times the number of people affected by cancer Even with these numbers, having an autoimmune disease can be very isolating. We feel like we are alone, that no one can understand what we’re going through

Having been diagnosed with Hashimoto's was a tough pill for me to swallow, but after my two days of feeling sorry for myself, I decided to take action and start the healing process with supplements and an autoimmune paleo diet. As a trainer and nutritionist, this has been helpful for me to help others cope with their diseases and figure out the best strategy for them to take.

Going out for dinner or social events can be tough because you can't eat a lot of foods that are available, because when you decide to go with an autoimmune paleo diet, you are very limited to what you can eat. I know this first hand with my food allergies over the years, and now I have thrown in an AIP diet in the mix. But I am learning to cope and now it's just not a big deal to me anymore. I am definitely going to stick with AIP because no other diet can boast even close to the enormous numbers of success stories out there of people feeling better and even reversing their diseases.

It is also helpful to know someone going through something similar, whether dealing with the same autoimmune disease or another type. Someone who actually “gets it”, is so helpful to talk to and to share ideas, to share in success stories, to talk about set-backs, and know how we feel before we say a word. Whether or not this person is a friend, or whether we’ve never met in person is irrelevant.  Nothing can replace this kind of support such as those of us with autoimmune disease face.

So, how do you find this community? Below are some of my favorite social media and book resources to take a look at.

Facebook Groups and Pages
Facebook groups and pages are a great way to meet people from the comfort of our homes. Facebook groups are great communities with many of who are likely to share some similarities with each individual’s situation, and be willing to answer questions or simply show moral support.  Here are active groups and pages which center around the AIP community.

  • The Paleo Approach Community
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Support Group
  • Autoimmune Protocol Diet
  • The Girlfriends’ Guide to Hashimoto’s
  • Thyroid Pharmacist, Dr. Izabella Wentz

Instagram Accounts
Instagram is a great place to find community, and simply reading the comments on posts can be an amazing source of great people to connect with!

Books
Here are a few books that I have bought this year that have been helpful for recipes and finding the right supplements.

  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Root Cause by Izabella Wentz, PharmD
  • The Hashimoto's Cookbook and Action Plan by Karen Frazier

I hope my resources help you with your journey to health and wellness. I encourage you to reach out and make connections and not go through this on your own because you don't have to! You are not alone. Connect with me if you have any questions on my facebook page, facebook.com/Angeliquefitness or email msfitbc@hotmail.com
